Want access to Netflix via broadband in France?

Our English-speaking advisors are here to help you find the broadband and Netflix plan right for you.

Countless hours of series, films and documentaries, viewable at any time and on any device… Netflix has undeniably revolutionised the VOD scene. More and more broadband providers are now offering deals giving access to the Netflix catalogue directly on a TV screen. This article goes into detail about the different packages available that enable you to get Internet and watch your favourites shows, all through one provider.

Netflix with an Internet Box

box-mobile

Available in France since 2014, Netflix and its ever-increasing catalogue of films, series and documentaries have become extremely popular in the country. It can be accessed via a computer, tablet or smartphone thanks to the app.

On top of this, today the major telecom providers in France will offer Netflix as a built-in feature, accessible directly on a TV, meaning you can watch shows and films directly on a bigger screen.

Getting Netflix with Orange

Two Orange devices give access to Netflix, as well as to all the Orange SVOD film and series catalogue: the Livebox Play Orange and the TV 4 set-top boxes. These are included in the provider’s triple-play offers: Play, Play Fibre, Jet and Jet Fibre. The other Orange offers will unfortunately not be incompatible with the SVOD platform.

From here, simply follow these steps to get onto Netflix:

  • Switch on your Livebox Play Orange or TV 4 Orange set-top box and press the “MENU” button on the associated remote control
  • Select the “Netflix” video pass - Orange Internet clients can also access Netflix directly by selecting the channel 70 on their Orange TV
  • Log into your account by typing in your email address and Orange Netflix password
  • New to Netflix? You can try Netflix for free for a month, then choose to either keep or cancel your subscription. Note that you will get re-enrolled automatically if you don’t actively ask for the subscription to be terminated. To get started, you will be asked to fill out your personal data (name, email address, password), the type of subscription you want (Essentiel, Standard or Premium) and payment method (you can either pay through direct debit or have your subscription directly added to your Orange bill). You can then activate your account and access Orange Netflix via the Orange TV.

You can put an end to a Netflix subscription with Orange at any time. However, once a new month is started is has to be paid, so make sure to ask for the cancellation before the renewal date. You will then still get access to the service for the rest of the month (as in, until the date of subscription). You can manage and cancel your subscription on the netflix.fr website. However, if you wish to terminate an Orange Livebox offer which includes Netflix, you will have to either cancel your Orange Netflix subscription or ask for it to be transferred onto your new Orange box if the latter is compatible with Netflix.

Getting Netflix with SFR

TV-netflix

Two SFR boxes give access to the SFR Netflix channel: the Décodeur Plus and the Box 4K. If your current SFR TV box isn’t one of these, you can ask the provider to have it changed via the SFR Alice customer service. This will be done for free if you are a FAMiLY client but will be charged otherwise. In all cases, you will have to order the new box and then return the old one to SFR, in order to be refunded the item’s deposit.

There are 2 ways to subscribe to Netflix with a compatible SFR box:

  • Online, through your customer account
  • Other the phone, via the SFR helpline at 1023

Once you do so, you will get the welcome email from Netflix and with the instructions to then go ahead and activate your account.

To then start enjoying all the platform’s content, you can either watch it:

  • On a TV screen via the SFR channel 66
  • On a TV screen by selecting the Netflix thumbnail on the SFR TV homepage
  • On a mobile phone or tablet, by downloading the Netflix app
  • On a computer by connecting to the Netflix website

Just like with the Orange Livebox, you get a free 30-day subscription when you first sign up. You can manage or cancel your Netflix account either on the platform app or website in the “My Account” section, or via your online SFR customer account, in the section named “Vos produits et services de tiers”.

Getting Netflix with Free

Free Mobile now allows you to get Netflix via 2 of its Freebox offers: the Freebox Delta priced at €49.99 (with an extra, mandatory €480 to pay for the box rental, payable either upfront or over 48 months by paying an extra €10 a month), or the Freebox One for €29.99. You won’t, however, be able to benefit from this with the Freebox Crystal, the Mini 4K or the Freebox Revolution.

Note however that the Free Internet packages include the Netflix Essentiel offer, priced at €7.99. This means no shows in HD, and a restriction on the number of devices connectable simultaneously. To get access 4K quality you will need to subscribe to a Standard or Premium offer. This is possible, but you will need to pay the difference on a monthly basis, so this means the Freebox Delta will be upped to €52.99/month, and the Freebox One will go up to €45.99/month.

If you have a Freebox Delta or Freebox One, you won’t be able to unsubscribe to Netflix during your contract, as this comes as a built-in feature. You can, however, change your Free TV box offer for a more basic one if you decide your current one is no longer for you. On the other hand, if you already have a Netflix account, you can notify Free and the supplier will be able to compile your already existent Netflix account and your Free bill together in one and only bill. This will be more practical for you, and also means you will avoid paying for 2 accounts if your already existing account is an Essentiel one. If you have a Standard or Premium Netflix account, you can still ask to compile the two bills, but you will have to pay the difference on a monthly basis, as stated above.

Getting Netflix with Bouygues Telecom

Bouygues Telecom offers Netflix on TV through its Bbox devices: the Bbox Must, Bbox Sensation and its Bbox Ultym, in ADSL, VDSL, or FTTH (Fibre To The Home). It won’t be available for Bboxes connected through FTTLA (Fibre To The Last Amplifier), where the device is connected to the entire building. The set-top box won’t be compatible with Netflix in this case. Likewise, the Bbox Classique won’t be compatible with Netflix either.

If you have a Bouygues TV Box compatible with Netflix, you can create an account directly on your device, and select one of the 3 subscription offers. Then, you can access the SVOD platform:

  • On your TV, through the channels 144 or 172 on your Bbox. On your remote control, simply press “OK”. On a Bbox Miami, press the green “TV” button on the remote control, then select “Bouquets TV” > “Les Bouquets” > “Tous”.
  • On a computer, by connecting to the Netflix website and entering your account information and password.
  • On your smartphone or on your iOS tablet, simply download the Netflix app for iPad / iPhone, for Android or for Windows Phone, depending on your needs. Then, enter your email address and password to access Netflix.

As with all the other providers, you can benefit from the free month of Netflix on your TV with Bouygues Telecom. Simply select “Démarrez votre mois gratuit” to create the account, enter your personal information, confirm your email address, choose your offer and payment method and finally accept the T&Cs. The screen will then display both the confirmation and the end date of your free trial. And that’s it, you’re ready to start your free month.

You can manage your Netflix account directly on your Bbox or online, on the Netflix website. You can change your offer by going to “Votre compte” then selecting “Changer de forfait”. To cancel your subscription, simply go to “Votre compte”, then “Annuler l’abonnement”. Like with any other provider, the cancellation will become effective at the end of the given subscription month.

For information and guidance on how to change a Bouygues contract, you can call on of Selectra's English Speaking advisors who will be able to help you find a broadband offer that better suits your needs: simply call 09 77 55 72 27.

About Netflix in France

television-netflix

Netflix made its arrival on the French market back in 2014 and has kept getting more and more popular since. Formerly a DVD rental service, the SVOD platform is now an online catalogue offering thousands of films and shows, with new releases on a monthly basis.

it is worth noting that the shows on offer may vary depending on a device’s location. So while in France, a subscriber will have access to the French Netflix catalogue, with programmes exclusive to the country (but with some shows from the US or UK unavailable for instance). A recent update also allows any user to download his or her favourite shows via the Netflix app, to then be able to watch them while offline.
