Satellite internet covers all of mainland France and is the most reliable broadband option where fibre and ADSL are unavailable. Four providers serve the residential market in 2026 (Nordnet, Starlink, OuiSat and SkyDSL) each with a different approach to speed, equipment and pricing. This guide compares them and explains how to choose based on your situation.

Our recommendation

  • Nordnet (neosat) is the go-to for most households: France's most established satellite provider, unlimited data, speeds up to 200 Mbps, and available with English-speaking support through Selectra.
  • Choose Starlink if you need low latency, ideal for remote working and video calls.
  • OuiSat and SkyDSL are worth considering for light users looking for the lowest monthly cost.

Satellite internet in France: comparing Nordnet, Starlink, OuiSat and SkyDSL

Satellite internet reaches every corner of metropolitan France, including zones blanches where no ground-based infrastructure exists. Unlike ADSL, which relies on the copper telephone network currently being phased out by 2030, satellite requires nothing more than a clear view of the sky and a dish installed at your property.

The key technical distinction between providers is the type of satellite they use. Nordnet, OuiSat and SkyDSL rely on geostationary (GEO) satellites, which orbit at 36,000 km and have higher latency (around 600–650 ms) but very stable coverage. Starlink uses a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites at roughly 550 km, which reduces latency to 25–50 ms, making it far better suited to real-time applications like video calls and online gaming.

Nordnet: France's leading satellite internet provider

Nordnet has been providing satellite internet in France since 1995 and is the market leader by number of subscribers. A subsidiary of Orange, Nordnet operates the Neosat satellite network using geostationary satellites built and operated by European manufacturers including Eutelsat and Thales Alenia Space.

Three neosat plans are available, all with unlimited data, speeds up to 200 Mbps download and 15 Mbps upload, and a Wi-Fi 6 router included. A VoIP landline service keeping your existing phone number is also included.

As a GEO provider, Nordnet's latency is around 650 ms (higher than Starlink's) which can affect real-time applications like gaming or video calls. For everyday use including streaming, browsing and standard remote-working applications, Neosat delivers a fully reliable experience.

Orange Satellite: Nordnet's offer for Orange customers

Orange Satellite is not a separate technology : it is Nordnet's Neosat service sold through Orange's own distribution channels. Launched in November 2023, it targets customers ineligible for fibre and those with ADSL speeds below 8 Mbps.

The plan includes unlimited data, speeds up to 200 Mbps download and 15 Mbps upload, unlimited calls to landlines in mainland France and 50 international destinations, and a Wi-Fi 6 router. The satellite kit can be purchased outright or rented monthly. No long-term commitment is required. Our advisors can set it up for you through the Nordnet call centre.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, uses a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver satellite internet with significantly lower latency than traditional GEO providers.

Three Residential plans are available in France, from 10€/month to 59€/month depending on the speed tier chosen.

Latency typically ranges from 25 to 50 ms : a major improvement over GEO providers, making Starlink well-suited for video calls, remote working and gaming. A one-off equipment cost applies for the Starlink Kit (dish and router).

Starlink runs without any long-term commitment, and the dish is portable: it can be used at different addresses, which makes it particularly practical for owners of a second home in France. Installation is self-service. The Starlink app guides you to the best placement for the dish. You can check availability at your address and order directly online.

OuiSat: a French satellite internet alternative

OuiSat is a French satellite internet provider offering three plans starting from €24.9/month, all delivering speeds of up to 35 Mbps over a geostationary satellite connection.

The three plans (Top, Evolution and Evolution+) differ in data allowances and included services, with the entry-level Top plan suited to light users and Evolution+ (up to €65.9/month) targeting households with heavier usage. No long-term commitment is required on any plan.

At 35 Mbps, OuiSat is slower than Nordnet and Starlink, but covers the basic needs of households that primarily use the internet for browsing, email and occasional streaming. Like all GEO providers, latency is around 600–650 ms. OuiSat is worth considering if you want a French-managed provider with a straightforward entry price.

SkyDSL: the budget satellite option

SkyDSL is a German-based provider operating in France with two plans starting from €27.9/month. Speeds reach up to 75 Mbps on the higher-tier plan (MaxiPLUS at €29.9/month), making it the fastest GEO option after Nordnet.

Like all GEO providers, latency is around 600–650 ms. A fair-use policy applies: exceeding your monthly traffic threshold during peak hours may result in reduced speeds. Hardware is sold separately. SkyDSL is a functional and cost-effective choice for light users (email, casual browsing, occasional standard-definition streaming).

A note on other satellite providers

Several providers that previously operated in France are no longer active in the residential market. Europasat has rebranded as Bigblu and greatly reduced its French residential presence. Numérisat and Alsatis no longer offer active residential plans. Vivéole, IDHD and Sat2way were absorbed into other entities. Nordnet, Starlink, OuiSat and SkyDSL are the providers currently offering active residential satellite internet plans in metropolitan France.

Which satellite internet plan is right for you?

Choosing the right satellite provider comes down to three variables: your internet usage, whether your property is a primary or secondary residence, and your budget including equipment costs. Before subscribing to any satellite plan, it is worth checking whether fibre or a 5G home box has recently become available at your address : these options are faster, cheaper, and lower-latency than satellite for over 92% of French households as of 2025. Satellite remains the right choice for the remaining share where no wired or 5G option is accessible, as well as for broadband without a phone line in rural areas.

Recommendation by profile

  • Primary residence, standard household use: Nordnet neosat or Orange Satellite. France's most established satellite network, unlimited data, strong support, and available through Selectra advisors.
  • Remote worker or heavy streamer needing low latency: Starlink. LEO technology delivers 25–50 ms latency and consistent speeds well above 100 Mbps, in a different league from GEO providers for real-time use.
  • Second home or seasonal use: Starlink (portable, no commitment) or Nordnet's month-to-month plan. Both can be paused or cancelled without penalty.
  • Light user on a budget: OuiSat from €24.9/month or SkyDSL from €27.9/month. Both are no-commitment GEO options with speeds sufficient for basic internet use.

Satellite internet cost and installation in France

All satellite plans require a dish installation, but the process varies. Nordnet and Orange Satellite provide a managed kit either included in the plan or available as a rental; professional installation is available. Starlink's kit is delivered to your door and designed for self-installation, and the app guides you to the ideal placement in under 15 minutes. OuiSat and SkyDSL hardware is sold separately at variable prices depending on the package chosen.

Monthly costs across providers range from €24/month to €65/month depending on the provider and plan. Equipment is an additional one-off cost for all providers. You can use our free internet speed test to measure your current connection before deciding whether to switch to satellite.

Government subsidy: Cohésion Numérique des Territoires

The French government previously offered a grant of up to €300 (or €600 for low-income households) through the "Cohésion Numérique des Territoires" scheme to cover satellite equipment and installation costs.

As of early 2026, this programme is temporarily suspended due to budget exhaustion, as confirmed by the ANCT. It may reopen in the future : check the ANCT website before subscribing if you were counting on this assistance.

Subsidy currently unavailable

The Cohésion Numérique des Territoires scheme is suspended as of early 2026. Any operator or third-party website claiming to apply this subsidy to new orders should be treated with caution until the programme officially reopens.

Frequently asked questions about satellite internet in France

What is the best satellite internet provider in France?

The best satellite internet provider in France depends on your usage. Nordnet (neosat) is the most widely used option, with speeds up to 200 Mbps, unlimited data, and strong support in France : it is the recommended choice for most primary residences. Starlink is the better option if you need low latency (25–50 ms) for remote working or video calls. OuiSat and SkyDSL offer the lowest monthly costs for light users who primarily need basic browsing and email.

Yes, Starlink is available across all of metropolitan France. Three Residential plans are available, starting from 10€/month. A one-off equipment cost applies for the Starlink Kit. No long-term commitment is required, and the kit can be relocated to different addresses. You can check availability and order directly on the Starlink website.

Is satellite internet better than ADSL in France?

In most cases, yes. Modern satellite providers like Nordnet and Starlink deliver speeds of 100 to 400 Mbps, well above the 5–20 Mbps typical of ADSL. However, satellite involves higher upfront equipment costs, and GEO providers (Nordnet, OuiSat, SkyDSL) have higher latency than ADSL. If you live in a zone blanche with no ADSL access, satellite is the clear choice. ADSL is also being phased out across France by 2030, making satellite an increasingly relevant long-term alternative in rural areas.

How much does satellite internet cost per month in France?

Satellite internet in France starts from €24.9/month (OuiSat entry plan) and reaches up to €65.9/month (OuiSat Evolution+ and Nordnet top-tier). Starlink plans range from 10€/month to 59€/month. Equipment is an additional one-off cost for all providers.

Can I get satellite internet for a second home in rural France?

Yes, satellite internet is an excellent option for second homes in rural France. Starlink is particularly well-suited: the equipment is portable, the plan has no commitment, and the dish can be moved between properties. Nordnet also offers no-commitment monthly plans that can be suspended during extended periods when the property is unoccupied. Both options work without a traditional phone line.
