What to do during a power cut

1

Check your fuse box

Check your circuit breaker (disjoncteur) and fuses. If your Linky meter shows PUISS DEPASSEE, hold the + button for 2 seconds to reset it. If only your home is affected, a tripped breaker is likely the cause.

2

Individual or collective outage?

Check whether your neighbours are also affected. A collective outage (panne sur le réseau) is Enedis's responsibility. An individual cut may be your installation, an unpaid bill, or a missing electricity account after moving home.

3

Call Enedis

Dial 09 726 750 + your department's 2-digit code (e.g. 09 726 750 75 for Paris; 09 726 750 69 for Lyon; 09 726 750 13 for Marseille). Available 24/7. You can also check live outage status at enedis.fr/panne-et-interruption.

Types of power cuts in France

Accidental outage (coupure accidentelle)

Unplanned — variable duration

Caused by storms, lightning strikes, snow, network equipment failure, road accidents involving power lines, or grid overload.

  • Storm Nils (Feb. 2025): 450,000 homes cut simultaneously ;
  • Duration: minutes to several days in severe cases ;
  • Compensation applies after 5 consecutive hours.

Planned outage (coupure planifiée)

Scheduled maintenance by Enedis

Scheduled for network maintenance or modernisation. Enedis notifies affected households in advance by letter or posted notice.

  • Minimum 5 working days' advance notice required ;
  • Usually daytime hours (8am–5pm) ;
  • Check upcoming cuts at enedis.fr/panne-et-interruption.

Compensation after a prolonged power cut

When an outage exceeds 5 consecutive hours, French regulations entitle you to automatic compensation credited directly to your electricity bill — no claim needed from your side.

Enedis compensation rates for prolonged power cuts
Meter type Rate Calculated per Cap
Residential (≤ 36 kVA) €2 excl. tax / kVA 5-hour tranche 8 days 8 hours
Professional (> 36 kVA) €3.50 excl. tax / kVA 5-hour tranche 8 days 8 hours

Example: A 6 kVA residential meter cut for 10 hours = 2 tranches × €2 × 6 kVA = €24 excl. tax credited to your next bill. Enedis applies this automatically — no paperwork required.

Safety tips during a power cut

Stay away from downed wires

Keep at least 10 metres from any fallen power line. Call 18 (fire brigade) or 112 (European emergency) immediately.

No generators indoors

Petrol and gas generators produce carbon monoxide — a silent killer. Use them outdoors only, well away from windows and doors.

Fridge and freezer

Keep doors closed. A fridge holds temperature for 4–6 hours; a full freezer for up to 48 hours.

Use torches, not candles

Candles are a fire hazard — especially near a possible gas leak. Keep a battery torch and spare batteries at home.

Unplug sensitive appliances

Disconnect computers, TVs and kitchen appliances before power returns. Voltage surges at restoration can damage electronics.

Save your phone battery

Switch to airplane mode between calls, close background apps and dim the screen. Keep a portable charger ready in winter.

Who to contact: Enedis or your supplier?

In France, the electricity grid is separate from electricity supply. Enedis owns and operates the physical network of cables and meters; your supplier (EDF, TotalEnergies, Engie, etc.) sells you the electricity and handles billing. For a network power cut, always contact Enedis — your supplier cannot fix a grid fault.

Enedis — grid & faults

  • Role: distribution grid operator for 95% of France ;
  • Phone: 09 726 750 XX (XX = your department, 24/7) ;
  • Online: enedis.fr/panne-et-interruption ;
  • Handles: network faults, meter checks, new connections, Linky.

Your supplier — contract & billing

  • Role: sells electricity and manages your account ;
  • Contact if: cut for unpaid bill, or you need a new contract ;
  • Winter truce: 1 Nov – 31 Mar — no disconnections for unpaid bills ;
  • Note: switching supplier has no effect on grid service quality.

Other reasons your electricity may have been cut

You've just moved into a new home

If you recently moved to a new address in France, power may have been cut if you haven't opened an electricity account in your name. Without an active contract, Enedis eventually disconnects the supply.

Call Selectra on +33 9 87 67 37 93 — our English-speaking advisors will find you a supplier and arrange the reconnection, free service. Once a supplier places the order with Enedis, the following timescales apply:

Enedis connection delays and fees
Connection option Delay Fee (incl. tax)
Standard 5 working days €32.40
Express 2 working days €32.40 + €43.76
Urgent Same day (request before 9pm) €32.40 + €60.58

Electricity cut for an unpaid bill

Suppliers must follow a strict legal procedure before cutting power for non-payment:

  • Two weeks after the payment deadline: first warning letter ;
  • If still unpaid: second letter with 20 days' notice before disconnection ;
  • Winter truce (1 Nov – 31 Mar): full cuts prohibited; supplier may reduce capacity to 3 kVA minimum.

To restore your electricity, pay the outstanding balance plus the Enedis reconnection fee (€51.88) charged via your supplier. Contact your supplier to arrange reconnection once settled.

Frequently asked questions

Call 09 726 750 followed by your department's 2-digit code — e.g. 75 for Paris (09 726 750 75), 69 for Lyon, 13 for Marseille. Available 24/7. You can also report and track outages at enedis.fr/panne-et-interruption.

Yes. Any outage exceeding 5 consecutive hours triggers automatic compensation: €2 excl. tax per kVA per 5-hour tranche for residential meters (≤ 36 kVA). The credit appears on your next electricity bill — no action needed.

No. The trêve hivernale (winter truce), from 1 November to 31 March, prohibits full disconnections for unpaid bills. Your supplier may, however, reduce your supply to a minimum of 3 kVA.

This means you exceeded your contracted power capacity (puissance souscrite). To reset: hold the + button for 2 seconds. If it keeps happening, consider increasing your subscribed power by contacting your supplier.

No. Enedis serves all suppliers equally as a regulated monopoly. Your grid service quality — including outage response times — is identical regardless of which supplier you are on. Switching to a cheaper or greener tariff has no impact on power reliability.
