Starlink in France: Plans, Prices & What Expats Need to Know (2026)

Updated on
min reading

Starlink is available across all of France from 10€/month (limited offer until april 30th), with no contract and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Operated by SpaceX, it delivers fast satellite internet over a low-orbit constellation, making it the most viable internet option for expats in rural France where fibre, ADSL, and 4G simply don't reach. No technician, no French paperwork, and no French bank account required to get started.

📌 Starlink France — What you need to know

  • Plans from 10€/month, no contract, cancel anytime
  • Hardware kit: €349 upfront (free rental available with select plans)
  • Download speeds: 65–400 Mbps depending on plan and location
  • Available at every French address : best suited to rural zones with no fibre or weak 4G/5G
  • Foreign bank cards accepted: no French IBAN required at sign-up
  • Self-serve portal and app only: no English customer support line

Starlink offers three residential plans in France, all with unlimited data and no commitment. The key difference between them is download speed and network priority during peak hours : lower-tier plans may experience slower speeds when local network demand is high.

All plans require a one-off hardware purchase: the Starlink kit (dish, Gen 3 router, cables, and kickstand) costs €349 to buy outright. On some plans, Starlink offers the kit as a free rental: check availability when you create your account. If you live in an area not yet covered by fibre, you may also qualify for the French government's Cohésion Numérique des Territoires subsidy, which reimburses up to €300 on satellite hardware.

Fibre broadband in France starts from around €22–25/month with Orange, SFR, Free, or Bouygues Telecom, and delivers higher speeds with lower latency. If fibre is available at your address, it is almost always the better choice on both performance and cost. Starlink earns its place where fibre hasn't arrived yet, or where ADSL speeds are too slow for everyday use. Use the eligibility checker in our guide to internet in France to see what's available at your address before deciding.

Our recommendation

The Residential plan at is the best value for most expats in rural France: fast enough for 4K streaming, video calls, and working from home, without the premium of the Max plan. Choose the Max plan only if you are in a denser area with many nearby Starlink subscribers and need priority network access during peak hours.

Starlink covers the entirety of metropolitan France as well as overseas territories. That said, in dense urban areas (Paris, Lyon, Marseille) network capacity is more limited and some lower-tier plans may not be available at every address. The best way to confirm is to run the Starlink coverage check directly with your French address.

Starlink is the right choice for expats in these situations:

  • Rural France with no fibre coverage: Massif Central, rural Normandy and Brittany, Alpine valleys, and other areas where infrastructure is still being built out
  • Zone blanche areas where 4G and 5G mobile coverage is too unreliable to serve as a home connection
  • French second homes in remote locations: Starlink's no-contract plans make it easy to activate and pause between visits; see our guide to internet for French second homes for a full comparison of options
  • Addresses waiting for fibre deployment: Starlink is a solid interim solution while France completes its fibre rollout (target: nationwide coverage by 2030)

Not the right choice if fibre or 4G/5G is available

If your address already has fibre access, or if you have strong 4G or 5G mobile coverage, a fibre broadband plan or a 5G home box will deliver faster speeds, lower latency, and a lower total cost than Starlink. Our guide to satellite in France explains when satellite internet makes sense and when it doesn't.

Based on published Starlink specifications and real-world usage reports in France, here is what you can expect per plan:

PlanDownload speedUpload speedLatency
Residential 100 Mbps65–100 Mbps10–20 Mbps20–60 ms
Residential 200 Mbps65–200 Mbps10–20 Mbps20–60 ms
Residential MaxUp to 400 Mbps10–20 Mbps20–60 ms

For everyday use, Starlink handles most needs without issue:

  • 4K streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+, no buffering
  • Video calls on Zoom, Teams, or FaceTime: stable and clear
  • Working from home: reliable for cloud tools, file transfers, and email
  • Multiple devices at the same time: 2–4 users with no performance drop
  • Weather resilience: the dish is designed to melt accumulated snow and withstand heavy rain and strong winds
  • Competitive online gaming: playable, but latency (20–60 ms) is higher than fibre; fine for casual play, potentially frustrating in fast-paced competitive titles

Latency with Starlink is significantly lower than traditional geostationary satellite providers like Nordnet, which can reach 600 ms or more. This is because Starlink's satellites orbit at around 550 km above Earth, rather than the 36,000 km altitude of geostationary satellites. For a full comparison between satellite options available in France, see our page on Nordnet satellite internet.

Starlink's subscription process is fully online and requires no French paperwork, a clear advantage for expats who haven't yet set up all their French administrative accounts.

  1. Check your eligibility: Enter your French address on Starlink's website to confirm which plans are available at your location.
  2. Choose your plan: For most rural households, the Residential at is the most balanced choice. If you only need light internet use, the plan at is sufficient.
  3. Pay with a foreign card: Visa and Mastercard are accepted. You do not need a French IBAN to sign up. A French bank account may be required for ongoing monthly billing on some plans.
  4. Receive your kit and install it yourself: The dish, router, and cables arrive by post within a few days. Installation takes about 15 minutes: place the dish outside with a clear view of the sky (facing north in France), connect the cables, and follow the Starlink app. No appointment, no technician.
  5. 30-day trial period: If you're not satisfied for any reason, Starlink offers a full refund within the first 30 days.

No English support line

Starlink does not offer English-language customer support by phone. All account management (including pausing, cancelling, or changing your plan) is handled through the online portal and the Starlink app, both available in English. If you need help choosing between Starlink and other internet options in France, the Selectra English-speaking team can assist: see our internet in France guide for more information.

Starlink satellite internet is available at every address in metropolitan France, including rural and remote areas. However, in dense urban areas such as Paris or Lyon, network capacity may be more limited and certain plans may not be available at every address. Before subscribing, check eligibility directly on Starlink's website by entering your French address.

Starlink offers three residential plans in France in 2026: the Residential at , the Residential at , and the Residential Max at . All plans are without contract. A hardware kit (dish and router) costs €349 to purchase outright, though free rental may be available with certain plans.

No French bank account is required to sign up for Starlink. You can pay with a foreign Visa or Mastercard during checkout. This makes Starlink one of the most accessible internet options for newly arrived expats who have not yet opened a French bank account. A French IBAN may be required for ongoing monthly billing on certain payment methods.

Starlink delivers typical download speeds of 65–200 Mbps in France on standard residential plans, and up to 400 Mbps on the Max plan. Upload speeds are generally 10–20 Mbps, and latency sits at 20–60 ms, significantly lower than traditional geostationary satellite providers. This is fast enough for 4K streaming, video calls, and working from home on multiple devices simultaneously.

Yes. Starlink's residential plans have no contract, so you can pause and reactivate your subscription at any time with no cancellation fees or reactivation charges, making it well suited to second homes used seasonally. The Roam plan is also available if you want to use the service from multiple locations across France or Europe. For a full overview of internet options for French second homes, see our dedicated guide.
