Engie or EDF: are they the same?

EDF and Engie formerly belonged to the same company - EDF-GDF. They then separated to form the only two energy suppliers in France: EDF for electricity, Engie for natural gas (in addition to ELDs in certain regions).

When the market was opened up to competition, EDF and Engie lost their supply monopoly and welcomed alternative suppliers. Today, they are still the main suppliers in France, but are indeed two separate companies.

Choosing EDF or Engie has no impact on the quality of the energy provided, as the breakdown services are provided by Enedis and GRDF, however consumers can still benefit from comparing offers and their potential savings on the price per kWh as well as the level of service provided to help choose the righ energy supplier for their needs.

How to Open an Engie Account

Open an Engie account today! Contact Selectra's English-speaking advisers to help you subscribe. It's free.

If you are moving to a home with natural gas service, you will need to open an account for gas supply in your name. For this you have two options: you can choose to open an account with Engie, or you can compare gas offers and choose a plan with an alternative energy provider.

Regardless of which supplier you choose, the process for opening a natural gas account is the same:

  • You need to have the following information in order to open an energy account with Engie
  • Your contact information: name, e-mail address, phone number
  • The address of your new accommodation. Don't forget the floor and apartment number if it is a flat (e.g. third floor, door on the left)
  • The name of the previous occupant
  • Your banking information (RIB) (IBAN and BIC, if you choose automatic payment)

How to Cancel a Plan With Engie

Whether you have signed up for the Engie/ GDF Suez regulated tariffs or for a competitive energy plan with Engie, you can cancel your plan at any moment. Energy suppliers in France are not allowed to charge early cancellation fees for energy plans, so changing suppliers comes with very little risk. If you decide to switch to another energy provider, your new supplier will take care of notifying Engie and ending your plan on your behalf.

If you need to close your Engie account because you are moving, you can cancel over the phone, online (through your online Engie account), or by post. If cancelling via post, we recommend sending a letter by recommended post (lettre recommandée avec avis de reception), as this will enable you to know when Engie has received your notice.

Save time by sending your termination letter with Selectra's cancellation letter template.

When cancelling your plan with Engie, don't forget to include the following:

  • Your full name
  • Your account number
  • The final date for service (your moving out date)
  • Your contact information, including email address and a forwarding address if possible

Who are Engie?

Engie (formerly GDF Suez, formerly Gaz de France) was formed in 2008 by the merger of Gaz de France and Suez, and its origins date back to the 19th century with the creation of the Universal Suez Canal Company. Gaz de France was created in 1946, when the French government nationalised the assets of private gas and power companies in France. The company was privatized in 2006 in preparation for its merger with Suez in 2008. When it was formed, GDF Suez became the second-largest utlity in the world. As of December 2014 the French government held one-third of GDF-Suez.

Engie is active throughout the energy delivery process. Engie's activities in France include:

  • Retail energy supply: Engie is the historic and largest natural gas supplier in France,
  • Gas distribution: natural gas distribution network operator GRDF is a direct subsidiary of Engie
  • Gas transportation and storage: Engie also owns natural gas transportation and storage companies
  • Electricity generation: Engie is the second-largest electricity producer in France, after EDF. About 50% of its electricity is generated from renewable sources
