Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video subscription price in France (2026)

Unlike Netflix or Disney+, Amazon Prime Video is not sold as a range of quality tiers, so your Prime Video subscription cost in France comes down to how you access it. There are only two ways to pay for it, plus one option and one student rate:

The key thing to understand is that Prime Video is bundled inside Amazon Prime. If you take a full Amazon Prime membership at 6.99€/month, Prime Video is already part of it — you do not pay twice. The standalone Prime Video only subscription at 5.99€/month exists but is barely promoted, because for just 1€ more the full membership adds free delivery, Amazon Music, Prime Reading and Photos. New Amazon Prime members also get a 30-day free trial. There is even a third route: one French fibre box — Free's Freebox Ultra — includes Prime Video at no extra cost (more on that below).

In short

How much is Prime Video in France?

Prime Video is 5.99€/month on its own, or free with Amazon Prime (6.99€/month / 69.90€/year). Ads show by default; pay 1.99€/month more to remove them.

Ways to get Prime Video

  • Prime Video only — 5.99€/mo
  • Prime Student — 34.95€/yr

  • 4K UHD included at no extra cost

Prime Video only vs full Amazon Prime

This is the question that confuses most people signing up. Amazon sells a cheaper Prime Video only plan (5.99€/month) and a full Amazon Prime membership (6.99€/month). The streaming content is identical — the difference is everything else Amazon Prime bundles in. Here is how they compare:

Prime Video only versus full Amazon Prime in France
Feature Prime Video only Amazon Prime
Monthly price5.99€6.99€
Annual priceNot available69.90€ (≈5.83€/mo)
Prime Video streamingYesYes
Free & fast Amazon deliveryNoYes
Amazon Music (Prime)NoYes
Prime Reading & PhotosNoYes
Ads on Prime VideoYes (default)Yes (default)
Free trialNo30 days

Because the two prices are so close, the standalone Prime Video plan only makes sense if you never order from Amazon and want nothing beyond streaming. For everyone else — and especially expats who shop online while settling into France — the full membership is the obvious pick.

Which one should you choose?

Take full Amazon Prime at 6.99€/month. For one extra euro over the video-only plan you get free next-day delivery, Amazon Music and Prime Reading on top of the exact same Prime Video catalogue. If you are staying in France for a year or more, the annual plan at 69.90€ works out cheaper still, at around 5.83€/month. Only pick Prime Video only if you genuinely never shop on Amazon.

Prime Video ads & the ad-free option

Since 9 September 2024, Amazon shows adverts on Prime Video by default in France, for every subscriber — whether you pay for full Amazon Prime, Prime Video only, or the student plan. You typically see a few minutes of ads per hour of viewing, played before and during films and series.

To watch without interruptions, you add the ad-free option at 1.99€/month on top of your existing subscription. It does not change your base price or catalogue — it simply removes the adverts. Amazon also reserves its highest-quality audio and video formats, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, for the ad-free tier, so the option restores those on compatible titles and devices.

💡 Do the maths before adding it

With the ad-free option, full Amazon Prime effectively costs 8.98€/month and Prime Video only 7.98€/month. That is still below Netflix's ad-free Standard plan (14.99€) in France. If ads do not bother you, skip the option and keep the base price.

Can I watch Amazon Prime Video in France with a foreign account?

Yes. Your Amazon account works worldwide, so a UK, US or Irish account will sign in and stream Prime Video in France without a VPN. What changes is the catalogue: Prime Video detects your location and shows the titles licensed for France, which are not identical to the UK or US libraries. Your watchlist, profiles and billing stay tied to your original account.

There is one nuance for EU residents. Under the EU content portability rule (Regulation 2017/1128), if your Prime membership is registered in another EU country you keep access to your home catalogue while temporarily in France. This does not apply to UK accounts since Brexit — a UK subscriber living in France sees the French catalogue, not the British one.

The Prime Video interface and audio default to French when you watch from France. You can switch the app language to English in your account settings, and change audio or subtitles per title from the player. For all your English-language options, see our guide on how to watch English TV in France.

What's included with Prime Video in France

Every Prime Video subscription — standalone or via Amazon Prime — gives the same access. There are no quality tiers to choose between:

  • 4K Ultra HD and HDR streaming included at no extra cost, where the title supports it;
  • Up to 3 simultaneous streams (maximum 2 on the same title);
  • Offline downloads on the mobile and tablet app for watching without a connection;
  • Amazon Originals such as The Boys, Fallout, Reacher and Le Flambeau;
  • X-Ray, showing cast, music and trivia while you watch.

Two things sit outside the base subscription. Prime Video Channels let you add third-party services (such as Paramount+ or sports packages) as paid extras billed through Amazon. And live sport comes and goes: Amazon held Ligue 1 football rights in France until 2024 and still carries events such as the Roland-Garros night sessions, but sports line-ups change season to season, so check the current schedule before subscribing for a specific competition.

Prime Video works on virtually every device: iOS and Android phones and tablets, smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Android TV), Amazon Fire TV sticks, Chromecast, Apple TV, games consoles and any web browser.

Get Prime Video included with your French internet box

If you are setting up fibre broadband in France anyway, you may not need to pay for Prime Video at all — but only with one operator. Free is the only provider that bundles Prime Video into its box — included for life on the Freebox Ultra, or free for 3 months on the Freebox Pop and Ultra Essentiel. The others include different streaming services instead, so check carefully before assuming Prime Video is part of an internet box plan.

The other operators don't include Prime Video

SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Orange bundle other streaming and TV services with their boxes (Netflix, Disney+, Max and similar depending on the plan), but not Prime Video. If having Prime Video included is what matters to you, Free's Freebox Ultra is currently the only option.

💡 The Freebox Ultra is the standout

The Freebox Ultra includes Prime Video for the entire life of the subscription, bundled with Netflix, Disney+ and Canal+. The cheaper Freebox Pop and Ultra Essentiel include it free for the first 3 months (then 6.99€/month) — a low-risk way to test it before committing. If you watch several platforms, the Ultra can work out cheaper than paying for each one separately. See our full breakdown of Free TV channels and streaming.

That said, don't switch broadband provider for streaming alone: compare the cheapest fibre offers and the total cost first, and weigh the box on its overall value. If live sport matters to you, see our guide to sports TV packages in France.
