By What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a programmable chip soldered directly into your phone's motherboard, as specified by the GSMA eSIM standard. Unlike a traditional SIM card, you cannot remove or swap it — instead, you download a mobile plan wirelessly by scanning a QR code sent by your operator.
In France, the technology is fully mainstream: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free all support eSIM on their standard monthly plans (forfaits), and several international travel providers like Airalo, Holafly and Saily offer data-only eSIM packs specifically for France.

Most smartphones launched after 2020 support eSIM: iPhone XS and later (Apple Support), Samsung Galaxy S20 and later (Samsung), Google Pixel 3a and later (Google Support).
